Local MEPs hail Airport's name change

Monday, 11th December 2006

East Midlands MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris have today welcomed the decision by Manchester Airports Group to restore the original name of East Midlands Airport.

In an attempt to identify the airport's location, especially for continental passengers, a decision was made a couple of years ago to change the name to "Nottingham East Midlands". However this caused considerable upset, especially in Derby and Leicester, cities more or less equidistant with Nottingham from the airport. And most people (and most road signs) continued to use the old name.

Manchester Airports Group, who own the airport, have now decided to revert to the old name, with the additional strap-line "Nottingham, Derby, Leicester". The slogan will be "Three cities, one airport".

Conservative MEP Chris Heaton-Harris welcomed the news, saying

"This recognises the reality that the airport serves all three cities, and it should resolve the concerns that the previous name change caused. It is a sensible decision".

Roger Helmer added:

"It's always very satisfying when familiar names are reinstated. I was delighted when Leningrad became Saint Petersburg again, and when Consignia changed back to the Royal Mail. And I'm very pleased that East Midlands Airport is back on the map."
