Backing for Bakewell amnesty campaign
Tuesday, 1st December 2005
Bakewell – East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has joined members of Amnesty International in Bakewell at an event designed to highlight violence against women.

Mr Helmer was invited by the Bakewell Chapter of Amnesty International to attend a meeting at the Friends Meeting Hall, to hear about their worldwide "Stop Violence Against Women" campaign.
While at the event, Mr Helmer met with local members of the group and also signed a petition protesting against the treatment of Bitondo Nyumba, in the Republic of Congo, who died earlier in June of this year after sustaining fatal injuries when she was beaten and raped by seven FARDC soldiers.
Speaking after the event, Mr Helmer said:
"While I do not support the whole of the Amnesty agenda and I have not made women's issues a main focus of my political activity, like all decent people I am opposed to violence against women (and indeed against men), so I was very happy to attend, to learn about the campaign and to offer what support I could.”
