Letter to the Editor

Nottingham Evening Post, Northampton Chronicle and Echo, Leicester Mercury
Wednesday 26 June 2002

Dear Sir

Lib Dem MEP Nick Clegg says Conservative MEPs are wrong about government plans for regional assemblies (Letters, 20 June). He says this is not an EU conspiracy but he then goes on to say that "nowhere else in Europe is government as centralised as it is in England". Labour has come up with this nonsense not because local authorities are failing or because there is a popular demand for change, but out of a desire to do everything the European way.

One by one Labour is getting rid of all the things that used to make Britain distinctive. It has continentalised our constitution by abolishing hereditary peers. It has continentalised our legal system by introducing the European Convention of Human Rights. It has continentalised our tax and National Insurance to EU levels. Now it wants to break us up into regions to give England an equivalent to the regions that exist elsewhere in the EU. It’s time the Lib Dems faced fact.

Yours sincerely,

Roger Helmer MEP
Chris Heaton-Harris MEP
