MEP campaigns at Bakewell Show
Monday, 8th August 2005
East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has been taking part in the annual 175th Bakewell Show, the largest agricultural and horticultural annual in Derbyshire.
Set in the heart of the picturesque Peak District, the show provides a great day out, showcasing agricultural, horticultural and DIY trade stalls and attracting some 60,000 visitors. Some of the main attractions this year included medieval jousting and scurry racing as well as the usual agricultural shows, competitions and stalls.
Mr Helmer, a regular visitor to the show, was helping to man the Democracy Movement stall and their campaign against the EU constitution. The Democracy Movement is a non-political cross party group working to defend Liberal democracy in Britain and across Europe. They believe that those who support the euro and the EU Constitution are working against the interests of the peoples of Europe.
Speaking after the event, Mr Helmer said:
"Since Tony Blair has denied the British people a referendum, the Democracy Movement decided to run its own referendum on the stall and allow people to express their own opinions. One man I approached said "I'm French". I wasn't sure how he'd react, but he continued "And we don't want the Constitution either!"
The Democracy movement stand was also visited by Patrick McLoughlin, local MP for West Derbyshire, who took the opportunity to register his own vote against the constitution.
