Conservative MEPs celebrate end of the beef ban with a barbecue in European Parliament
Roger Helmer, Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, today celebrated the lifting of the export ban on British beef with a BBQ in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
It has been 10 long years since British beef has been allowed on the menu but Conservative MEPs today held the barbeque to showcase British beef so that other MEPs will go back to their home nations with the message that ‘British beef is back’.
Mr Helmer believes the British government must now help farmers to market their beef abroad. He wants to see a concerted and determined effort by ministers and the Meat and Livestock Commission to restore British beef to its rightful place in international markets.
Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:
"EU experts have finally approved the total lifting of the ban on exports of British beef and as we have been campaigning for this for six years, this is extremely welcome and overdue news.
"The export ban on meat from younger cattle was lifted seven years ago but the red tape was so onerous that British farmers lost a huge chunk of their market share. Now we are finally on an equal footing again.
"Many farmers in the East Midlands have been waiting for this day for a decade. British beef is a high quality product and much sought after. It is as safe as any other beef in the world."
