Lift the Ban Immediately and Unconditionally

Friday, 20 September 2002

East Midlands Conservative MEPs Chris Heaton-Harris and Roger Helmer have called for the French ban on British Beef to be lifted "immediately and unconditionally".

Responding to opinions emerging from the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) announcement today declaring British Beef safe Roger Helmer MEP said:

"At last French experts have finally seen sense and admitted what we've all always known - that British Beef is safe.

There are now no obstacles left to the French Government lifting its illegal ban on British Beef imports. The British farming industry now deserves nothing short of a total unconditional lifting of the ban.

Chris Heaton-Harris added:

"British farmers have waited too long for this decision. The previous French government has defied EU law, flouted the judgement of Europe's highest court and ignored the opinions of Europe's top scientists.

The new French government should now end this political farce, its defiance of legal rulings and accept the opinion of its own experts. It is time for them to do the right thing and allow in our beef"
