Support for Lincs bomber memorial service

Tuesday, 5th September 2006

Lincolnshire – Lincolnshire’s Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has joined hundreds of Second World War veterans, their families and members of the armed forces at a service of remembrance for Britain’s Bomber Command.

The service which took place in a packed Lincoln Cathedral last Sunday, and which was preceded by a Lancaster flypast, marked the unveiling of a permanent memorial ledger stone to Bomber Command, following an ongoing and successful public campaign spearheaded by local veterans.

The stone, dedicated to the memory of the 55,888 lives lost in the Bomber Command offensives, will be placed in the cathedral floor as a permanent reminder of their sacrifice.

Speaking after the event, Mr Helmer said:

“I was delighted to attend the unveiling of memorial to Bomber Command following the hard work and dedication of all the campaigners in securing such a lasting and deserved memorial veterans.

“I have supported this excellent initiative from the outset and it is extremely fitting that the courage and skill and dedication of the men of Bomber Command, so many of whom paid the ultimate price is recognised in this way. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude”
