Tories join CBI in EU regulation attack
Monday, 25 November 2002
Attending the CBI conference today, East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer, together with four of his fellow Conservative MEPs, joined the CBI in highlighting the damaging weight of regulation impacting British business.
Out of the CBI's top 10 list of unwelcome regulations published today, 7 are EU directives.
Euro-MP Roger Helmer, commented:
"Over-regulation costs jobs and as Conservatives in the European Parliament, we will vote to protect our business environment.
Top of the CBI list is the Agency Workers Directive, which the CBI claim will cost 160,000 jobs in the UK alone. Last week in Strasbourg, Labour MEPs voted in favour of it, despite the pleas of UK business and indeed the UK Government.
The CBI has rightly identified the EU as the principal source of these destructive regulations, which we - unlike Labour - opposed throughout their passage into EU law."
