Letter to the Editor
Lincolnshire Echo - Tuesday 22nd October 2002
Dear Sir
In the last couple of years I have had many complaints from constituents, and from bus companies and tour operators, about the outrageous behaviour of HM Customs with regard to personal imports of alcohol and tobacco from the continent. One of the few clear benefits of EU membership is our right to seek the best prices across Europe, yet customs officers have been seizing not only goods but also vehicles from innocent tourists.
Despite recent court rulings, HM Customs has continued with this disgraceful practice. I have been astonished by the high-handed response I have received from them when I have raised the issue on behalf of constituents.
Now at long last John Healey, the Minister responsible, has said that an announcement will be made shortly, confirming the rights of tourists to bring back dutiable products for their own use. We should welcome this announcement, late as it is. But it does not go far enough. HM Customs have been in clear breach of the rule of law. We must now demand compensation for those East Midlands residents who have had their goods and vehicles illegally seized and sold or destroyed. Justice requires no less.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Helmer MEP
