Letter to the Editor

Nottingham Evening Post - Monday, 1 December 2003

Dear Sir,

Keith Ward (Letters, 26/11) calls for an end to letters from "sad, single-issue campaigners" who write to challenge the so-called benefits of Britain's EU membership. He calls for "more informed debate".

Presumably he wants space in the paper for pro-EU comment, but wants to deny it to those who take a different view. If you agree with Mr. Ward, that's "informed debate". If you disagree with him, that's "hysterical ranting". Perhaps Mr. Ward hasn't worked it out yet, but it takes two sides to have a debate.

Mr. Ward's "sad, single-issue campaigners" are passionate about independence, and democracy, and the right of the British people to decide their own affairs for themselves. It seems to me that this is a very honourable single-issue to campaign on. It's a key issue that persuaded me to stand for the European parliament.

Yours faithfully,

Roger Helmer MEP
