Dolphin free guarantee
Thursday 27 March 2003
Consumers will soon have a guarantee that the tuna they buy is dolphin friendly, thanks to a new tracking and verification system ensuring the correct labelling of all tuna caught in the future. The law was passed by the European Parliament today.
The new system should ensure that rogue fishermen and dealers using environmentally unfriendly methods will no longer be able to pass off their fish as being dolphin friendly.
Speaking from the European Parliament, local MEP Roger Helmer, said:
"Consumers want to enjoy tuna in the knowledge that dolphins have not been harmed. If we are to take genuine steps to protect the dolphin population, it is essential that there are real checks and provisions in law. This system should put an end to any rogue fishing, and people can eat tuna without worrying about the impact on dolphins."
