MEP attacks restrictive rules for drivers
Tuesday, 12 January 2003
East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer has attacked proposals today supported by
the European Parliament that will place new restrictions on the amount of
time that hauliers and coach drivers can spend on the road.
Conservative MEPs have been fighting the proposals since their first introduction
and have won various amendments saving essential services such as road
rescue and an exemption for classic cars. However, MEPs voted in favour of the proposals which will not only place burdensome and unenforceable restrictions on drivers of most forms of commercial and industrial transport, but will also give foreign authorities the right to confiscate British vehicles if the draconian new laws are not adhered to.
"This is bad news for East Midlands industry and tourism," said Mr Helmer. "The transport industry has again been hit by plans to make their working less flexible rather than more."
Although we have been able to make some important amendments the proposal remains impractical, untenable and unenforceable. I will continue to highlight the damage that these new laws will inflict on East Midlands hauliers and coach drivers as they pass through the Parliamentary process."
