Letter to the Editor
Wednesday 7th September 2004
Dear Sir,
With only a few weeks to go to the US elections, anyone reading the British press could be forgiven for thinking that the leader of the free world is a simpleton, unable to string a few words together (though if they had seen his acceptance speech at the recent Republican Convention in New York, they would have got a very different impression).
The fact is that George W. Bush has been subjected to a campaign of denigration and vilification in the British media, ranging from the BBC to the Guardian, which has been as misplaced as it has been disgraceful.
So what are the facts? Like Democratic challengers Al Gore and John Kerry, George Bush went to Yale, one of America's top-drawer, Ivy League universities. All three men were members of the prestigious Skull and Bones Club, whose list of former members includes many of America's great and good. Bush was an average student achieving a "C" grade -- competent but not outstanding.
Interestingly, John Kerry has never released his grades from Yale, and cynics might interpret his reticence as evidence that they were not very good. This impression is heightened by the fact that he went on to a very minor law school -- Boston, ranked Number 29 in the USA. George Bush, on the other hand, went to Harvard Business School, ranked Number 1.
Bush may not be another Einstein, but he's no dummy either. You don't get to be President of the United States by being thick.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
