Letter to the Editor
E Midlands local newspapers - Tuesday 27th April 2004
Dear Sir,
As we gear up for the euro-election campaign in a few weeks, I am struck by the number of people I meet who have not previously voted in a euro-election (or perhaps don't vote at all), yet have decided to vote this time.
Labour's climb-down over the referendum on the EU Constitution has aroused a lot of interest, and my experience confirms what the opinion polls are showing -- that an overwhelming majority of voters are keen to vote NO to the Constitution. And we know from our own large-scale telephone polling in the East Midlands that, of voters who gave their opinion, over 80% want to keep the Pound.
Widespread reports of the outrageous fraud and waste in the EU, and Commissioner Neil Kinnock's failure to address it, have also raised the profile of the issue. Voters are rightly worried about the way the EU is going, and want to do something about it.
So their choice for the euro-election should be clear. Conservatives are the only major party wanting to keep the Pound and oppose the Constitution. And Conservative MEPs, especially my colleague Chris Heaton-Harris, have been at the forefront of the campaign to expose fraud and waste in Brussels.
If you want to send a clear message to Tony Blair, to Commissioner Kinnock, and to the Brussels establishment, you know who to vote for.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
