Local MEP Condemns European TUC's call for mass strikes against Iraq War Wednesday 26 March 2003 The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Steering Committee has called on all its affiliated organisations, including the TUC in the UK, "to react to the outbreak of war by all means within their possibilities including work stoppages and strikes" with immediate effect. East Midlands Euro-MP Roger Helmer called this proposal outrageous. Commenting from Brussels, he said: "War was never the first choice, but we are now at war. Our armed forces are putting their lives on the line, and should be in no doubt that the whole country is 100% behind them. I call on all UK Trade Unions to confirm that they condemn and reject the ETUC proposal, which only serves to reinforce Saddam Hussein's evil regime." |
