Conservative MEP argues that attempts to resurrect constitution show only contempt for voters
Strasbourg – East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has today slammed the continued attempts to revive the failed EU Constitution as ‘undemocratic’ and argued that they show only ‘contempt for voters’.
Speaking in a session of the Strasbourg parliament, Mr Helmer said that despite claims that the EU is a Union of Values based on democracy and the rule of law, following the Danish rejection of Maastricht in 1992 and the Irish vote against Nice in 2000, they were both told to go away and try again.
Now following last year’s emphatic rejection of the constitution by founding members France and Holland, the EU was once again trying to revive a Constitution which is dead in its own terms and was attempting to implement large chunks of it with no legal basis.
Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:
“In our pig-headed determination to press on with the European project in defiance of public opinion, we show our brazen contempt for the voters, and for democratic values.
“And the voters are starting to notice. Amongst my East Midlands constituents, I sense a growing concern, and indeed anger, against the European project. So press ahead with the EU Constitution if you must, but be warned. You are fuelling public resentment which will blow the European construction apart.”
