“Government's EU web-site is pure propaganda”
Wednesday, 19th April 2006
East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has today slammed a new Government website, which claims to be a valuable resource on UK EU policy as ‘pure propaganda’.
The new ‘Britain in the EU section’ of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website, www.europe.gov.uk, which was launched today claims to be responding to a Eurobarometer poll in which 60% of the public felt they would like to have more information about the EU and what it does.
However, instead of providing a balanced view with straightforward, factual and accessible information, Mr Helmer believes that the website presents a biased and wholly unrepresentative pro-European account and fails to mention the often devastating repercussions of damaging EU red tape and legislation on the UK.
Similar Eurobarometer studies also show that a majority of EU citizens are dissatisfied with the EU, but unsurprisingly the web-site fails to mention them.
Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:
“I am frankly shocked by the degree of bias contained on this website, which makes no mention of the huge damage that EU regulation is doing to labour market flexibility, job opportunities and prosperity generally.
“Despite claiming to stimulate debate, this website gives no hint that EU economies are generally underperforming those of the USA and Asia or any mention of the fact that the EU share of global trade is set to decline dramatically over coming decades.”
“In short, this is not information. It is simply propaganda”.
