MEP visits British Geographical Survey

Monday, 28th November 2005

Keyworth – East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer today was today in Keyworth, Nottingham to visit one of the United Kingdom's premier centres for earth science information and expertise.

He was at the headquarters of the British Geographical Survey, which is a public sector organisation, responsible for advising the UK government on all aspects of geoscience as well as providing impartial geological advice to industry, academia and the public.

During the visit, Mr Helmer had a tour of the site, which included the opportunity to witness the latest in 3D technology and met with David Ovadia, the Head of International and Corporate Development.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Helmer said:

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the British Geographical Survey as we are very fortunate to have the headquarters of such an important international institute in the East Midlands.”

“I was especially interested in their vital work for the environment, including carbon sequestration and nuclear waste storage, as well as their studies in remote countries like Afghanistan, which could lead to the discovery of exploitable mineral deposits and so offer an economic alternative to poppy cultivation.”

Aswell as the site in Keyworth, just outside Nottingham, BGS also have a large regional office in Edinburgh, and smaller offices in Wallingford, Exeter, London and Cardiff.
