Leics MEP meets Gideons in Lutterworth

Tuesday, 3rd July 2007

Lutterworth, Leicestershire - Local Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has been presented with a bible by the Gideons following a visit to their national office in George Street, Lutterworth.

The Gideons are a non-denominational Christian organisation, whose aim is to provide Bibles and New Testaments for people who might not otherwise have access to them, in the hope they will discover the Christian faith in a personal way. They do this by placing Bibles in hotels, hospitals, schools and prisons, not only in the UK but around the world.

Mr Helmer visited the Gideons at a dinner in Lutterworth following their national cabinet meeting, where he heard a presentation about recent Gideon campaigns in Hong Kong and Indonesia and was presented with a Bible by National President Jack Lancashire. He also met with executive director Mr Iain Mair.

Since the Gideons became established in the British Isles in 1949, over 30 million Gideon Bibles and Testaments have been presented nationally and there are now currently over 5,000 Gideon members involved in the work across Britain. Around the world some 63 million copies of the Bible or New Testament were distributed last year.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Helmer said:

“I was delighted to have the opportunity of learning more about the work of the Gideons at first hand, from their officers at their National Office in Lutterworth”.

“I regard the Bible as fundamental to English culture and literature, and I am well aware that it has provided comfort and encouragement to millions people, not least because of the Gideons' efforts in distributing it around the world. I was astonished to learn that The Gideons had distributed 63 million copies of the Bible or New Testament in the last year alone”.
