Open letter to Giscard d'Estaing

M. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing,8 January, 2003
Convention President,
Bâtiment Justus Lipsius 175,
Rue de la Loi,
Brussels - 1048

Dear Monsieur Giscard d'Estaing,

European Convention: a name for the new Europe

I understand you recently proposed that the organisation previously known as the EU should receive a new name after ratification of the proposed Constitution, in order to reflect its new nature, status and objectives, and I believe that you called for a public debate, and made a number of suggestions.

May I offer you my own thoughts on this question. It seems to me that The People's Republic of Europe would be ideal. It would reflect both the European élites' ambition to create a single unitary super-state, and also the emerging parallels between the new Europe and the old USSR -- the passion for central planning, the overbearing institutions, the prescriptive and intrusive regulation, the endemic fraud and mismanagement, and above all, the increasing lack of democratic accountability.

As an MEP, I am a reluctant member (under Rule 5B) of the EPP Group in the European parliament. It seems to me that "The People's Republic of Europe" would have a special resonance for the European People's Party -- I imagine they would be flattered and delighted by it.

I shall follow the progress of your project with great interest.

Yours sincerely,

ROGER HELMER
