Letter to the Editor
Derby Evening Telegraph - Wednesday 11th February 2004
Dear Sir,
John Gretton (letters, 6th Feb) is just plain wrong on the issue of immigration from the EU's "accession states" - the countries of central and Eastern Europe which will be joining the EU in May. He says that five countries - Denmark, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden - have agreed to open their borders to immigrants from accession states from May 1st.
Originally those five intended to do so, but all except Ireland have changed their minds. The fact is that only Britain and Ireland currently plan to throw the doors open on Day One, so all economic migrants from the accession countries will be coming to the British Isles.
In fact John Gretton is wrong twice over. Even if his five countries were to open their doors in May, they are all small countries. It would STILL be true, as I said, that Britain is the only major EU country to open its doors on Day One.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
