Letter to the Editor
Leicester Mercury - Thursday 26th January 2006
Dear Sir,
Collis Gretton of the European Movement writes that in the European Commission's maritime safety proposals, "there is no mention anywhere of EU flags replacing national ones" (Letters, 13th Dec).
So what does he think the following quote, from the Commission proposal, means? The document says that the third maritime package is "to require member states to thoroughly check that ships flying their flags comply with international standards, and therefore to have a maritime administration which strictly applies the quality criteria. Stepping up responsibility in this way is the precursor to the future development of a European flag."
There is thus a very clear mention of EU flags replacing national flags. Collis is wrong. Dead wrong. And he knew, or ought to have known, that he was wrong. If he knew, then his letter amounts to a lie. The EU is an empire built on lies. Mr. Gretton offers us an excellent example.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
