Letter to the Editor
The Independent - Tuesday 6th April 2004
Dear Sir,
Alun Michael’s letter on horse exports (31/3) is woolly, and short on detail. It fails to reassure.
Currently only the “Minimum Value Rule” protects low-value British horses from the threat of live export under potentially inhumane conditions. But this rule is under threat from EU single market provisions.
Does Mr Michael believe he can keep the Minimum Value Rule? If not, how does he propose to replace it?
Along with other MEPs, I have successfully tabled parliamentary amendments to the Commission’s live animal transport proposals. These amendments would ensure the protection of British horses.
Mr Michael must now give straight answers. Will he support theses amendments in Council? If not, why not, and what is his alternative?
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
