Your local MEP: Hot or not?

Wednesday, 6th December 2006

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has today been named as the most effective British MEP at communicating with his constituents through the media.

Open Europe, an independent think tank set up by some of the UK’s leading business people has today published the results of its ‘Your MEP: Hot or Not?’ survey designed to determine which MEPs are the best at actively promoting their work.

The survey, based on published sources (Google and Lexis-Nexis) of the media coverage achieved by British MEPs over the last six months ranks all 78 MEPs in order and puts Mr Helmer at the very top of the tree.

Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:

“So much of politics is about getting the message across, so I'm delighted to find that I seem to be getting the coverage, which allows me to be able to effectively communicate with all of my constituents the work that I do on their behalf.

The results which can be viewed at http://openeuropeblog.blogspot.com/2006/12/your-mep-hot-or-not_05.html also ranked Mr Helmer’s Conservative colleague Chris Heaton-Harris at 20th, and other East Midlands MEPs Robert Kilroy Silk 42nd, Bill Newton Dunn 61st; Derek Clark, 66th and Glennis Wilmott at 69th.
