Monday 14th November 2005
Leicester – Leadership contenders David Cameron and David Davis today addressed a packed hall at the Walker Stadium in Leicester in the first of the Conservative Party’s traditional leadership hustings.
The East Midlands hustings, which was attended by in excess of 300 party members, was the first in a series of 11 meetings around the country which are designed to allow members the opportunity to quiz both candidates on a wide variety of issues.
Both men were given a 10 minute opening slot to state their case, before answering a huge number of questions on topics such as education, smoking, defence and Europe. East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer, was pleased with his response from Mr Cameron, who confirmed his plans to withdraw Conservative MEPs for the EPP group in the European Parliament.
Speaking from Leicester today, Mr Helmer said:
‘While I believe that we have two excellent candidates for the party leadership, what I have heard today confirms my support for David Cameron. I believe he is sound on Conservative principles and has the personality and style to lead the party to victory and back into Government’.
