Pint, Pound and Mile Saved!
Wednesday, 5th December 2007
East Midlands Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris were at the forefront of campaigning to keep legal the use of traditional British Imperial measures following a European Directive which could have meant the phasing out of the pint of milk or beer, a pound of lamb or even the mile for road traffic signs from 2009.
It has now been confirmed that a new report has been adopted by the European Parliament which allows non-metric weights and measures to be used indefinitely.
Roger Helmer MEP said: ‘This nonsense should never have even been considered by the European Parliament in the first place. It should be up to each country which weights and measures they want to use’.
Chris Heaton-Harris MEP added: ‘I will be on the look out for any signs that non-metric measurements are being disallowed. Traditional weights and measures are our British heritage, it is a system that everyone knows and understands and I'm delighted Brussels will no longer be abolishing it’.
