Kilroy-Silk goes AWOL

Wednesday, 5th November 2008

It has been announced that Robert Kilroy- Silk, an East Midlands MEP, will be going into the Australian jungle as a contestant on the reality television show “I’m a celebrity… get me out of here!” Mr Kilroy-Silk, who earns over £60,000 per year as an MEP, plus expenses, will in addition be picking up a substantial fee for his appearance on the programme.

Mr Kilroy-Silk has come under fire for his poor attendance at the European Parliament, as well as his virtual absence from the East Midlands, which he is supposed to represent. Chris Heaton-Harris, the Conservative MEP, once offered a free bottle of champagne for the first person to spot Kilroy-Silk in the region. It was never claimed.

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer (who has an excellent attendance record in the parliament, and very rarely goes into the jungle), comments: “At a time when the Parliament is voting on vital measures that threaten jobs and prosperity here in the UK, like the climate change package, the pesticide directive and the working time directive, Kiljoy-Silk has decided to abandon it all and head off to Australia for a jolly.”

Helmer adds: “Kilroy is pretty casual about attending the parliament. He is almost never seen in Committee, and when he votes, he generally abstains. The tax-payer is entitled to expect that he should do the job he is paid for, not set off on highly-paid extra-curricular junkets”.
