Euro-MP slams plans for "Made in EU" labelling

Tuesday, 13 January 2004

Derbyshire Euro-MP Roger Helmer has attacked the latest proposals from the European Commission for a new "Made in EU" label that could spell the end of national origin marks.

The European Commission is discussing plans to end the traditional "Made in Britain" label. In place of this they are looking to introduce a compulsory "Made in the EU" label for all products manufactured in the EU.

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer, said:

"Products throughout the world are recognised as high quality goods by the "Made in Britain" label. It is essential that nations can promote their products in any way they wish.

For food products in particular, people want to know whether what they buy is British - or better still is locally prepared. Organisations such as East Midlands Fine Foods do a great job promoting local producers, and I hope that the Government will take a tough line with other Member States in defending the rights of UK consumers to know what they are buying and exactly where it comes from.

It is hard to see how replacing the "Made in Britain" label with "Made in the EU" will bring any advantage to our businesses. The plans will lead to yet more costs and bureaucracy from Europe."
