Letter to the Editor
Daily Telegraph - Saturday 1st April 2006
Dear Sir
Amid the huge damage that New Labour has done to Britain's heritage, surely its abuse of our language ranks amongst the most egregious.
Even the Daily Telegraph now speaks of "investment in public services", when clearly what is intended is (for the most part) current expenditure, not investment. And we speak unthinkingly of Labour's "reforms", when we mean changes which are arguably neutral and frequently deleterious.
It has well been said that "modernisation" usually means "alteration for the sake of novelty".
Sir Winston Churchill mobilised the English language and sent it off to war. Labour's Orwellian Newspeak has bowdlerised it in the service of political spin.
Yours faithfully
Roger Helmer MEP
