Letter to the Editor
Derby Evening Telegraph - Tuesday 14th February 2006
Dear Sir,
As Conservative MEPs for Derbyshire, we are very concerned about proposals to close Pickford House Museum and to curtail opening hours at the Silk Mill and Central Museum. These are false economies.
At a time when Derby is keen to develop tourism, it is counter-productive to close popular tourist attractions. These Museums are also a vital part of the cultural heritage of the city. Often politicians have to make tough decisions between culture on the one hand and budgetary constraints on the other. But in this case, the wider interests of the local economy are aligned with cultural values.
The museums must be retained.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
Chris Heaton-Harris MEP
