Letter to the Editor

Northampton Chronicle & Echo - Wednesday, 22nd March 2006

Dear Sir,

Kevin Barron (Your Say, 22nd March) is stretching things a bit to describe the Sustainable Development Commission as "the Government's independent watch-dog". Independent? It clearly has an agenda of promoting all renewables while opposing existing conventional and nuclear technologies. If you establish an agency to promote renewables, you can't be surprised when it does just that.

And no, I don't advocate allowing unstable and dangerous regimes like North Korea to develop nuclear programmes. On the contrary, I advocate robust action to prevent them from doing so. But if Kevin thinks it is fair to draw parallels between a relatively free and democratic Britain on the one hand, and the tragic, destitute prison-state of North Korea on the other, perhaps he should try spending a few days in North Korea, as I did last year.
