Shock at Chinese "organ harvesting"

Wednesday, 19th July 2006

A shocking new report has accused the government of China PRC of harvesting the human organs of jailed dissidents, a local MEP has heard today.

The report by respected Canadian human rights lawyers/campaigners has accused the government of China PRC of the systematic "harvesting" of human organs from jailed dissidents, especially from members of the Falun Gong movement, a religious/philosophical movement which has suffered widespread persecution in China.

The organs are then used for transplants in China, says the report, or are sold on the international market. The report quotes examples of organs being obtained on demand, at the request of users. The victims of this horrific process invariably die, and their remains are cremated.

Local MEP Roger Helmer was briefed on the report by Dr. Li Shao, who is an academic staff member of the Department of the Built Environment at Nottingham University, and is a Vice President of Falun Gong in the UK.

Commenting on the meeting, Mr Helmer said

"I have been aware for some time of the persecution of religious minorities in China and I have protested against it. But this highly credible report adds a new and horrifying dimension. I shall be raising it both in Brussels and with the UK government".
