Letter to the Editor
Loughborough Echo - Tuesday, 10 June 2003
Dear Sir,
I commend Cllr Peter Lewis (Letters 5 June) on his call for a referendum in Charnwood and throughout the UK on the proposed European Constitution and, whilst he omitted to call upon his Conservative MEPs, offer my wholehearted support.
The draft constitution as it stands involves a huge transfer of power from Westminster to Brussels, and from elected representatives to unaccountable judges. It is outrageous that Peter Hain describes it as 'Just tidying up the Treaties'. The Constitution would mean great changes for British democracy and the way the British people are governed
It would be a constitutional outrage for this government to ratify such a Constitution without the assent and authority of the people. I believe that all who value freedom and democracy should campaign as never before for a referendum. Let the people decide.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Helmer MEP
