MEPs back British pint
Monday, 5th September 2005
East Midlands Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris have attacked a new European assault on the traditional British pint, mile and acre.
Enjoying a pint at the local pub could soon be a thing of the past as the European Commission has controversially claimed Britain must set a date for abolishing its imperial system 'as soon as possible'. Instead of the much loved British pint, pub goers could be forced to order 568ml of beer!
Brussels’ decision to take up the issue again has sparked controversy among British citizens who see it as further evidence of grand theft by mainland Europe.
Speaking from Brussels today, Chris Heaton-Harris said:
“It is typical of this government and the European Commission to try and force Britain to become more European. Every time we give them an inch, they take a mile! We do not need nor want more metrification"
Roger Helmer added:
"One man, Steve Thorburn, was prepared to go to court for pounds and ounces, and he lost. But if they try to take our pints and our miles, there will be blood on the streets".
