Research & Industry links with enlargement countries to be strengthened
Tuesday, 19 November 2002
East Midlands Euro-MP Roger Helmer, as Conservative Delegation spokesman on Research issues in the Industry and Research Committee, will be supporting a new report outlining measures ensuring the European enlargement countries’ full involvement in the research programme.
The Report requires the commission to ensure that within the 6th Framework programme, researchers in the applicant countries are treated fairly compared to their counterparts in current member-states. Euro-MP Helmer has been following the 6th Framework Directive through the parliamentary process, and working to ensure that the interests of British researchers are protected. The programme has a budget of 16 billion euros over five years. The Zimmerling report on the involvement of applicant countries in the programme will be voted in the parliament tomorrow.
The Industry & Research Committee has called on the Commission and member states to promote links between research institutions and industry, and called on candidate countries to develop their own research strategies within the Framework Programme.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Roger Helmer MEP said:
"I expect this report to be voted through successfully. It will facilitate the involvement of the accession states in the 6th Framework Programme, which in turn will strengthen research and industrial links with the UK".
