Letter to the Editor
Leicester Mercury - Wednesday 24th May 2006
Dear Sir,
Rob Revell (Mailbox, 24th May) asks where I propose that new nuclear power stations should be built. I propose to award him the NIMBY of the Year prize. Of course no one wants a nuclear power station next door, and they are best built in remote areas. Re-use of existing sites has been suggested.
But as Mr. Revell may have noticed, no one wants new roads, factories, industrial estates, airports, mobile phone masts, or indeed wind farms. Sooner or later we have to have some sort of compromise between our desire to leave the landscape untouched, and our need for travel and communications and power.
As for waste disposal, I don't claim to be an expert, but the British Geological Survey, in Keyworth, Notts, seems to think that deep burial is the best bet, and I'm not arguing. This is the solution adopted in Finland, and the Finns seem very happy with it.
