Letter to the Editor

Derby Evening Telegraph - Monday 15th March 2004

Dear Sir,

In his letter of March 9th, Edward Spalton asks us to guess the origin of a quotation about Europe. Readers might like to spot the odd one out from the following four quotations about the proposed EU Constitution:

•  Valery Giscard d'Estaing: "A great leap forward for European integration"

EU Commission President Romano Prodi: "A giant step"

EU Commission's official assessment of the Constitution: "Fundamentally changes the structure of the Union".

Britain's Labour government: "Just a tidying-up of the treaties".

Everyone in Brussels knows that the proposed Constitution is a hugely important step which will create a political union in Europe, and leave Britain a mere off-shore province. Only our Labour government tries to deny what everyone else can see.

Yours faithfully,

Roger Helmer MEP
