Battle of Britain remembered by MEP
Thursday, 22nd September 2005
Brussels - Marking the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer is pictured with a pewter scale model of a Spitfire, which he keeps in pride of place in his office in the European parliament in Brussels.
Helmer represents the East Midlands, covering the Rolls Royce factory in Derby, and has attended events at the Rolls Royce airstrip in Nottingham where Spitfires have done demonstration flights.
Speaking on the 65th anniversary, Helmer said:
"There is little I can do to add to the enormous sense of pride and gratitude we all feel when we remember the sacrifice of those brave young men. The sight of a Spitfire always seems to give me a lump in my throat".
Helmer also keeps in his office a print of the well-known Barrie A.F. Clark painting of a Spitfire coming at the viewer out of an angry sky. He says he keeps it to encourage his German colleagues!
