Local MEP calls for an end to EU funding of Terrorism

Monday, 8 July 2002

Local Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has called for an end to EU funding of terrorism, following a recent report indicating that EU funding in Palestine is being used for terrorist purposes.

Mr Helmer believes that a political solution to suit both Palestine and Israel must be found but that terrorism must not be endorsed.

The report claims that the EU’s large-scale funding of Palestine is being used for propaganda and anti-Semitic purposes as well as to promote racism and xenophobia, which are now considered illegal under the European Arrest Warrant. There are also fears that the EU money allocated to Palestine for "educational purposes", is being used to fund religious intolerance of the Jews.

East Midlands Euro-MP Roger Helmer has written to the European Commission, asking them to confirm that action is being taken to stop EU funding of terrorism in Palestine.

Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, Roger Helmer MEP said:

"The situation in Palestine and Israel must be resolved peacefully. Both sides must understand that there can be no military settlement to the conflict, as only a political settlement will lead to peace in the region.

"The EU must work with Israel and Palestine to find a peaceful solution that suits both sides. Funding Palestinian terrorism will achieve nothing and only worsen the situation - it must be stopped immediately."

The Report entitled "Lifting the Veil on EU Funding and Palestinian Violence" was originally published in the German newspaper Die Zeit and subsequently in The Wall Street Journal Europe.
