Letter to the Editor
Northampton Chronicle & Echo - Tuesday, 18 November 2003
Dear Sir,
Derek Clark of UKIP derides the Conservative position on the proposed EU constitution, and our demand for a referendum (letter, 15/11). He falls into the trap that has dogged euro-sceptics for years - he would rather attack those working on the same side, for national independence, rather than attack the forces of European integration.
Conservative MEPs have already distributed over half a million postcards addressed to Tony Blair at Downing Street, demanding a referendum. We have the largest membership of any political party in the UK, and we are now organising a referendum petition up and down the country in every constituency in the land.
I am well aware that a number of other parties and non-party organisations are gathering signatures on their own referendum petitions, and I wish them well. This is more than one party's initiative - it is a genuine mass movement of the British people, involving individuals from all parties and from none.
Let's all work to defend independence and democracy in our country, and not squabble amongst ourselves.
If you want a referendum please sign our online petition at www.putittothepeople.com.
Yours faithfully,
Roger Helmer MEP
