Lib-Dem MEPs vote to Scrap UK's Security Council seat

Tuesday, 3 February 2004

In a January 29th vote in the European parliament in Strasbourg, on the Laschet report on EU-UN relations, East Midlands Lib-Dem MEP Bill Newton Dunn voted against an amendment specifically designed to protect Britain's permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The text of the amendment, moved by local Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris, called on the EU to "maintain the United Kingdom's and France's permanent seats and veto power on the Security Council".

The amendment was defeated.

Commenting on the outcome, Roger Helmer said:

"There is a clear agenda in the EU institutions to eliminate Britain's Security Council seat and replace it with an EU seat. By supporting that agenda, Newton Dunn clearly shows that he has gone to Brussels to promote the EU's interests, not the interests of Britain or of East Midlands voters".
