MEP visits Spalding launch of Wash Estuary project

Monday, 8th August 2005

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer was today in Moulton, near Spalding to visit the groundbreaking launch of the 2nd Edition Wash Estuary Management Plan and attend a meeting of its Strategy Group.

The Wash Estuary project was established in 1994 to promote the wise use of the area’s resources while trying to maintain the balance that allows the local communities to prosper and safeguards the wildlife and landscape features for future generations. It aims to help the Lincolnshire community to feel connected with The Wash – its wildlife, its colourful and industrial past and its exciting future.

The day kicked off with an introductory address by John Hayes, MP for South Holland & Deepings with further contributions from the Government Office of the East Midlands and the Norfolk County Archaeologists amongst others

Lunch was taken at Moulton Windmill, an enormous ten storey brick tower mill, built in the 1820s in the heart of the Lincolnshire Fens. The mill, a major Lincolnshire success story, was one of 30 historic buildings selected be included in ‘Restoration’, a popular BBC series, hosted by Griff Rhys Jones.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Helmer said:

"I was delighted to have the opportunity to support this important event, and to learn more about the vital work of the Wash Estuary Strategy Group. It is especially encouraging to see a range of councils across Lincolnshire and Norfolk, and other agencies, working together for the common good of the Wash and its vital eco-system".

Lincolnshire citizens will be offered the chance to discover more about the work of the project in ‘Wash Week 2005’, a series of events from Hunstanton to Skegness and out onto the tidal seas, designed to offer the chance for all to enjoy and learn more about the area. The week will run from 6 August 2005.
