Windfarms - Letter to the Editor
Lincolnshire Echo - Wednesday 4th January 2006
Dear Sir,
Robert Gore (Your View, 22nd December) is so confused that it's difficult to know how to respond. He says that (A) I'm supporting nuclear power which (he says) is unpopular, and (B) I'm so concerned about re-election that I slavishly follow public opinion. These points contradict each other -- they can't both be right!
I'm glad he agrees at least that we need nuclear power. It is the only technology capable of delivering the large amounts of carbon-free energy that we need. But like him I agree that renewable technologies have a role to play at the margin. I don't agree that I have "mocked" wind-farm advocates -- I have just presented reasonable arguments to show that wind is relatively less promising than other renewables (like bio-fuels), especially in inland locations in the East Midlands.
I would strongly object to a wind-farm in my village, so I have great sympathy with local residents who are actually threatened with these monsters in their back-yards.
Yours faithfully
Roger Helmer MEP
