Work for welfare welcomed by MEPs
Wednesday, 9th January 2008
Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris have welcomed the Conservative Party’s Green Paper ‘Work for Welfare’ which sets out a vision for real welfare reform to help make British poverty history. The principles outlined include respect for those who really cannot work but employment for those who can through assessments and limits to claiming out of work benefits. Currently 4.8 million are claiming ‘out of work’ benefits including 2.64 million on Incapacity Benefit.
Roger Helmer said “Labour has done nothing on this in ten years- we have an underclass because we have decided to pay for one. The Conservative Party has now made clear that we don’t want hard working families to pay for those who are able to work but take the soft option. These type of programmes have been successful in the USA and given back self-reliance and self respect to many thousands of people.”
Chris Heaton-Harris added “We believe it is time for an entirely new welfare system, based on an entirely new culture of responsibility. Not the state taking responsibility away from people and making them dependent, but people and communities taking responsibility for themselves and achieving the success and satisfaction of independence.”
