Liberal Democrats' Little Yellow Book

Monday, 22 March 2004

The Conservatives have published a new compendium of the inconsistencies, duplicity and political correct lunacy that characterise today's Liberal Democrat party.

The "Liberal Democrats Little Yellow Book" ridicules the conflicting policies being promoted by Charles Kennedy's party, while displaying their contradictions and commitment to political correctness.

Produced for political activists, journalists and floating voters, it highlights the most flagrant examples of Lib Dem hypocrisy - for example Mr Kennedy's proclamation in July 2002 that "people want honesty", compared with his May 2002 declaration that "sometimes in politics you've got to lie". The Liberal Democrats are well known for promoting one policy line nationally, while campaigning for another at local or regional level. For example, their Parliamentary party has demanded a reduction in road building and fresh curbs on cars - while at local level the party has supported plans for new by-passes: at Hasting and Newbury.

They claim that banning fox hunting should be a free vote issue - yet their official party line is to ban the sport. They are soft on drugs, but have sought a ban on public smoking. And as the Little Yellow Book relates, their spokesmen have promoted an anti-jail policy, suggesting that burglars should escape custodial sentences, rapists and paedophiles deserve the right to vote when they are jailed; while their spokesperson for women has supported the introduction of compulsory sex education for seven year olds.

Declared Conservative co-chairman Dr Liam Fox: "The book outlines many of the ridiculous policies and contradictions the Liberal Democrats have dreamed up over recent years. It is a concise compendium put together for political activists, journalists and floating voters to expose the Liberal Democrats for the politically defunct and irrelevant Party they are.

"At a time when Britain faces crises in taxation, security and public services, the Liberal Democrat agenda increasingly seems trivial and marginalised."
